Helping with Medical Needs and Your Day-to-Day
Women with Bleeding Disorders
Women have bleeding disorders, too. They often go undiagnosed and untreated, as healthcare providers are not as familiar with identifying this condition in women. There are serious challenges for girls and women due to changes encountered during the menstrual cycle and throughout a woman’s reproductive life stages like pregnancy, childbirth, and menopause.
The most common bleeding disorder in women is von Willebrand disease (WVD), an inherited bleeding disorder that affects up to 1% of the U.S. population. VWD affects men and women equally, but women have more symptoms due to heavy menstrual bleeding.
Women and girls can also have mild hemophilia. Women who carry the gene for hemophilia may have low factor levels, and sometimes women are referred to as “symptomatic carriers.” There are other rare factor disorders including factor I, II, VI, VII, XI, and XIII deficiency that affect men and women equally.
While men and women may have similar abnormal bleeding symptoms, women can experience additional complications during their periods, pregnancy, labor and delivery, surgeries, and daily life. PromptCare’s dedicated bleeding disorders team is here to navigate these challenges by your side.
