New Treatment, New Life

New Treatment, New Life

Specialized infusion therapy and expert nursing give PromptCare patient a new outlook after myasthenia gravis diagnosis.

Don was ready to enjoy his retirement. After decades of hard work, he looked forward to spending his days on the golf course and embracing newfound freedom. But in the summer of 2021, everything changed. One day, while mowing his lawn, a wave of weakness hit him, leaving him struggling to make it back inside. The fatigue was sudden and intense, unlike anything he’d experienced before. It was clear something was seriously wrong.

His symptoms hit fast and hard. What started as muscle weakness quickly became debilitating—chewing was difficult, his eyelid drooped, and every movement felt exhausting. Soon after, double vision set in, leaving his eyesight misaligned and making even simple tasks a challenge. After months of searching for answers, a neuro-ophthalmologist connected the dots and diagnosed Don with myasthenia gravis (MG).

Don’s diagnosis brought new challenges. Myasthenia gravis, a rare neuromuscular-autoimmune disorder that disrupts the connection between nerves and muscles, forced a complete shift in his lifestyle and sparked a relentless search for effective treatment. Initially, he was prescribed oral steroids and other immunosuppressants, but they offered little relief and came with their own side effects. A year on high-dose prednisone added to his struggles, prompting him to seek better options.

Determined to regain control of his health, Don sought care at University of Kansas Medical Center, a larger hospital with experience treating MG. There he connected with a team of skilled clinicians and found a new treatment path: Vyvgart, a specialized infusion therapy tailored to his condition. Administered through a vein, these infusions regulate the immune system’s response, reducing the muscle weakness and fatigue that had come to define his days.

Don initially began a cycle of four infusions over seven weeks, followed by a short break. As his symptoms stabilized, the regimen shifted to a five-week cycle, providing a steady balance of improvement. Each session lasts about an hour—a small investment of time that made a profound difference. With every infusion, Don felt relief, regaining strength and a renewed sense of normalcy.

At the heart of Don’s transformation was his nurse, Mary Nordling, RN, who administers his infusions and provides essential support out of PromptCare’s Infusion Suite in Wichita, Kan. “My priority is to advocate for Don, reduce his stress, and eliminate any barriers to treatment,” she explains. Each week, she starts his IV, checks his vitals, and ensures the session is comfortable and pain-free. Reflecting on his progress, both Don and Mary are grateful for their partnership, which has led to a remarkable turnaround in his health.

Don has come to appreciate the consistency and ease of his infusion therapy routine. What was once a daunting journey with MG has become manageable and reassuring. The Infusion Suite is not just a place for vital care—it’s also a chance for him to enjoy a day out. He’s grateful for the seamless service, with prescriptions filled, insurance managed smoothly, and financial concerns quickly addressed. “In a way, the staff is just as important as the therapy,” he says. “Mary makes everything so simple, and the whole PromptCare team’s responsiveness keeps me on track.”

From the fear and uncertainty of his initial diagnosis to the strength and energy he feels today, Don recognizes how far he’s come. With Mary’s guidance and the effectiveness of the infusions, he’s regained his freedom. “Life is good,” he says simply. Thanks to the skillful support of PromptCare, Don is now able to embrace retirement, focusing not on his illness but on living each day to its fullest potential.
